Apple
Conversational Interaction Design

Delivered features across domains including Weather and Music with both UI/UX and CUX patterns.

Here are 2 feature highlights I’ve shipped.

In 2020, we shipped severe weather alerts and air quality index.

Information are slot-filled based on availability and severity. I categorized each alert as 0-2 severity and customized each dialog (we had to do that then!) based on as precise of location information we can get along with severity. Our goal for the UI representation was to keep in-line with what’s being shown in the Weather app and keep to exisiting Siri UI patterns.

Level 1 severity“There is a <Frost Advisory> in your area.”Level 2 severity“The National Weather Service has issued a <hurricane warning> for <Clark county>, an <evacuation response> is <in place>. It’s forecasted for around 4pm.”

For air quality index, we shipped 2 versions during Siri’s transition from
full-screen UI to the now compact design.

We sneaked in a little bit more scope.

Although previously not in scope for this project, I helped push our team for Siri to be able to
announce singular Weather facts. With the trend for more severe weather, air pollution, and high UV
on the rise, I saw a need (and in particular, a global desire) for more direct information inquiry.

For years, teams at Apple has requested to introduce celebrities and cartoon characters to replace Siri’s voice. For many reasons, it never felt right for Siri, until Oprah and Oprah’s Book Club
came along.

The project was fast-moving, the UI a very simple design.

The core of the project was defining how Siri shares space with others, whether Siri is in relationship with others,
and identifying key phrases that we would like Oprah to avoid.
